We have heard from a lot of people that face masks are causing problems to their skin

There are two main problems with wearing a mask aside from discomfort, friction and high humidity.

Friction is the simpler to resolve; find a mask that fits you well, (with some you can fold the edges and adjust the ties to make a far more effective and tailored fit.)

The humidity is harder to manage; whilst the skin above the mask is getting too little moisture in autumn and winter months, the skin below the mask is getting too much.

Here are some of our tips on how to minimise the impact caused by wearing a mask:

It is best not to wear makeup in the masked area;

Prep skin with a protective moisturiser over the areas that the mask will cover. If you have more oily/combination or breakout-prone skin, use a lightweight serum instead. This will create a barrier to the skin absorbing excessive moisture;

Apply a moisturiser half an hour before wearing the mask to let it absorb;

Use a moisturiser that leaves a clean finish with no residue; this can accumulate under the mask and trap grime causing new problems;

Take a break at least every two hours;

When you take the mask off for the day, double cleanse in this area, using a gentle cleanser and a lightweight moisturiser allowing your skin to breathe. You can still use a heavier moisturiser on the rest of your face, which will be de-hydrated in colder months;

Be sure to clean your mask after every use! It is easy to want to reuse masks, but once they have been used there is a possibility that they they have been contaminated and that they will have picked up oils and dead skin cells from your face. Using a clean mask every time you go out not only prevents skin issues, but also helps keep you safe.
